Project Summary:
This project describes the implementation of a barcode-supported closed-loop medication management process to improve medication safety in a hospital setting. To address medication errors and meet the requirements of the German Hospital Future Act (KHZG), a fully digital medication workflow was introduced within the hospital information system MEDICO. The system enables barcode-based verification of patient, medication, and administration time, ensuring a safe and traceable medication process. Implementation was supported by nursing leadership through staff training, continuous on-site support, and ongoing adaptation based on feedback from clinical practice. Initial observations show high acceptance among nursing staff and no reported medication mix-ups on wards already using the system. The project also demonstrates how digital innovations in everyday nursing practice can align with key principles of the Magnet Model and contribute to the ongoing development of nursing excellence.
